Each year, Northfield Pride offers a flexible education scholarship to one or more outstanding LGBTQIA+ graduating high school seniors who live within 10 miles of Northfield or attend school in Northfield. Award funds may be used toward any type of post-secondary education, whether that be a 2 or 4 year college, trade school, training courses, or a certificate program. The scholarship amount will range from $1000 to $2000 and payment will be made to the institution or organization.
Sylvester Huyck (2008-2025) was an engaged citizen of Northfield, a student in Northfield schools, and an outspoken member of the LGBTQIA+ community. They loved colorful hair and fabulous outfits and were widely recognized for their welcoming spirit and deep empathy. Sylvester lived their life with intent, curiosity, and an open spirit. In their 16 years, they experienced a life full of adventures, dedication, self-expression, and the love of many friends and a devoted family.

The scholarship named in Sylvester’s honor fittingly recognizes “qualities of leadership, community involvement, and self-reflection.” For each of the many activities they participated in, Shorin-Ryu Karate, YMCA backcountry trips, Northfield’s Housing and Redevelopment Authority board etc., they led by example. Sylvester knew that people looked to them to set a standard, and that gave them an opportunity to improve the world around them by being an unyielding force for what they believed was right.
Scholarship recipients have the option to be recognized publicly for this award or to remain anonymous.
